It Waits in the Woods
by Josh Malerman
fast-paced
I just finished reading 'It Waits in the Woods' by Josh Malerman, and I'm still trying to catch my breath. This chilling short story is a masterclass in building tension and suspense. Malerman's writing is atmospheric and immersive, drawing you into the dark and foreboding world of the Michigan forest.
The story follows Brenda, a young woman driven by desperation and terror as she searches for answers about her sister's disappearance. Malerman expertly weaves together elements of urban legend and folk horror, creating a sense of creeping dread that's impossible to shake.
What I loved most about this story was its ability to balance psychological suspense with supernatural terror. Malerman's prose is economical yet evocative, making every word count.
My only reason for not giving this a full 5 stars is that the story feels a bit slight, and some readers may find the ending a tad abrupt. Nevertheless, 'It Waits in the Woods' is a gripping and unsettling read that will appeal to fans of horror and suspense. Just be sure to read it with the lights on!
