Some aspects of this book reminded me of Sound of Music or Nanny Mathilda: the high number of nannies before the heroine arrives, the distant father, the new nanny that find a way to the heart of the children.
But this book stands on its own legs and it's an amazing and brilliant novel.
It's about growing up, second chances, what a family is and being a mother.
I loved how it describes the London setting, not glamorous but poverty and gloom. At the same time I loved the Scottish settings, full of lovely people and an amazing scenery.
Zoe, the main character, grows slowly on you and she goes from being a desperate single mom that tries to get the father of her child back to a strong woman in charge of her life.
All the characters are well written and fleshed. They are relatable and you cannot help rooting for them.
The plot is engrossing and even if the book is more than 400 pages I read it in two days, turning pages as fast as I could.
I read other books by Jenny Colgan but this one is maybe her best.
