death, death of animals, miscarriage, blood, gender reveal of unborn children

A nuanced and thoughtful look on how the human mind intertwines itself and meaning to the world around us. How lessons learned in one area of our lives can be decoded with another.

I am a huge bird finatic so had to try Brood when when I saw it. It reminded me of one of my favourite books when I was young: 'Sasha's Tail: lessons from a life with cats by Jacqueline Damian'. I can say this was that amazing book but with my added love of birds.

Darkness is my favourite chicken.

Many of the experiences of trying (and subsequently failing) to keep backyard poultry alive are ones I've shared. Once with a stray rooster as a youth and second keeping a very snippy group of quail who were the best 'apartment hens' a person could ask for. I felt this book mirrored so many tasks, from observing, feeding, interigating and trying to gauge just what is happening in those tiny little minds.

My one gripe would be the part where it is said all pregnant soon-to-be-mothers want a girl, and if they find out they are having a boy, all mothers will grieve, and subsequently keep trying or want to try till they get their girl. This really rubbed me the wrong way, not just because I am trans and gender and sex be different, but just the tone, the arragance of the assumption. This is highly personal to me and I am fine if others disagree, I'm sure there are people who feel this way, I personally am frustrated by the importance placed on this in our modern society.
