Murder at Holly House
by Denzil Meyrick
I enjoyed Murder at Holly House enough that I'm definitely glad I read it, but I do have mixed feelings about it.
First, the good: I liked the writing, I found it easy to read and I enjoyed the occasional use of mixed media. The main character was well developed, and clearly being set up to appear in further mystery novels. I liked the village setting and the choice to set the book post-WW2.
The not-so-good is mainly down to the book not being quite what I expected: I wanted a cosy murder mystery with Christmas elements, and instead the story is much larger in scope than 'just' murder, with less traditional detective investigation than I hoped, and the Christmas mentions are so brief you could easily miss them completely if the cover and title didn't so obviously scream Christmas. I also wish there had been at least one or two likeable characters in the book (the main character is well written but not necessarily likeable).
It's a decent book, just not quite what I was looking for.
