Considered giving 5 stars, because this is quite well put together, but felt a bit drawn out at times, and like there were almost too many storylines coming together (some tied in better than others), but very well written nonetheless! 

Vengeful ghosts (reminded me of Japanese and Korean vengeful femme ghost stories), mystery, colonialism in SE Asia and the racist misogyny of the French, war waged by Japan, China, the French, and the US in Vietnam, spanning decades. A fascinating novel!
