The Serpent King
by Jeff Zentner
WHOA. So I read this book as part of a list of Mock Printz books for my library. I need to sign myself up to read out of my usual fantasy and horror, and thankfully I am made to read great books like this one. A wonderful read for any high schooler, especially those with the dreaded college decision approaching, it also deals with abusive parents, absent parents, and finding your own beliefs in a small town that keeps getting you down.
Your characters are three teens in the hillbilly hills of Tennessee: Lydia, the privileged white girl with supportive parents, a bright future at a good college, and an eagerness to leave the small-minded pricks that is her hometown. Meanwhile her only two friends, Travis and Dill, are not so privileged with terrible home lives, and are stuck where they are for the foreseeable future. Read this book to find out what they make of themselves and if they are able to escape or are trapped.
