Laxmi's Mooch by Shelly Anand
5.0

Such a sweet and uplifting book. I haven't seen a children's book before that normalises having body and facial hair, especially on young girls and girls of colour.
I love the illustration style so much, and the integration of Hindi language both throughout the story and on the inside cover pages.

I'm particularly interested in the choice of narrative pov. The story begins and ends with Laxmi talking directly to the reader, eventually inviting them to share their own mooch, just like her classmates.
I'm not 100% sold on the choice. It feels a little disjointed to me, but I do like how it invites the reader into the conversation by doing so.
