Fire Shut Up in My Bones by Charles M. Blow
4.0

I'm not historically very into memoirs but lately I've been drawn to them. I found this book both hard and easy to read. The traumatic abuse of Blow's young life was heartbreaking, yet his writing seemed to easily hold my interest, even if I can't quite pinpoint why. Most powerful to me were his series of revelations that helped him begin to heal from his past in the final chapter. I think it's so important to have works like these that detail often buried hurts that young boys suffer. Additionally Blow's discussion of his sexuality and his often fraught understanding of that part of himself is too rarely explored. This short memoir gives insight into so many facets of a life very different from my own, and for that I am grateful to have read it.
