The House of Always by Jenn Lyons
3.25

Book pitch: villainous, undead pirate-queen Kraken was only after your friends because she wanted to see if your friend could help out her mentally ill rampaging Dragon girlfriend. Incredible things happening in this book; this is what the new decade of high fantasy books should strive to have. This book is also host to world’s most uncomfortable and dangerous group therapy!

*spoilers ahead
As for things I didn’t like as much, the plot didn’t seem as well crafted in this as it was in previous installments in the series & rather similarly to the previous two books I just wish there had been more time for Janel/Teraeth and Janel/Kihrin & all of them as a trio to develop. In book one Teraeth and Kihrin literally spend like half a decade together as friends so I feel like we really got that slow burn and development so now in comparison everything’s moved soo fast. As much as I want some horny scenes in my high fantasy I feel like there’s a time and a place y’all and while entertaining I feel like everyone should’ve been more concerned with dying than with being horny lmao. Also. I put this book down for two months bc I was so pissed about Janel being pregnant lol. I get that they have all of their previous lifetimes in their heads and I guess they’re embracing that a bit, but to ME they’re Kihrin/Janel/Teraeth who are barely into their twenties and barely into their relationship so the baby thing kinda pissed me off. Hoping I will like the conclusion more because so far no book in the series has topped the first one for me…
Bonus points however for the gays really winning in this book!! Shout out to Kalindra/Jarith and Kihrin’s parents for being the token straights tho.
