It starts like any other cliche YA or romance novel - a guy and a girl meet in a book store, obviously the girl is different to any other, and obviously there's an instant connection. And that's where any similarities with romance books ends. The rest of the book twists and turns through the darkest parts of the most messed up persons mind.

The times they accidentally bump into each other, the things they have in common, almost as if they're made for each other but all carefully orchestrated by Joe who knows everything about Beck thanks to the wonderful creation known as the internet. If you lose your phone, get that shit locked down. Change your passwords, cancel your contract, the lot. You never know.

I found myself almost starting to sympathise with Joe at times. He has fantastic wit and almost captivating intelligence that really would make him an amazing guy if he wasn't such an absolute psychopath. Every action is justified as romantic in some way or brushed off like it's no big deal and he really is convincing at times. The thing is, you're constantly aware of how sick and twisted he is, but I STILL found myself almost rooting for him, almost wishing it all ended well for him in the end.

I also (insanely) found myself liking Joe more than Beck. He clearly saw her through rose tinted glasses (mixed with a hint of his own crazy blindness) but thankfully I don't have the same issues as Joe and I could see right through her and oh boy, I did noooot like what I saw. She treated everyone around her awfully and only thought of herself. Joe liked what he saw, and that wasn't very much. He's also very good at justifying the bad in people that he cares about.

The fact that this book was written in present tense made me feel like I was REALLY experiencing this book. I felt like I was going on the journey with sick, twisted Joe and whiny, terrible Beck and that's just one of many things that makes this book so special.

Not quite a psychological thriller, clearly not quite a romance, but a weird, messed up combination of that mixed with something completely original altogether.
