Utterly disappointing as I should have known it would be, considering the return of Whedon to the writing team. His comic-writing has never been great to me, and I knew he’d destroy all we worked for. Honestly, I should have stopped at the gorgeous ending of season 11.

So here are the good(ish) parts:
- Successful Andrew?
- Buffy is established as being 30 which 100% means there is more time between seasons 7 & 8 than a year and a half— suck it, Scott Allie! That never made sense. (And at the time, I recall season 8 starting in present time, ie 2007, Buffy would be 30 in 2011, this all tracks.)
- Dawn & Xander have a baby and predictably name her Joyce. Cute, but I don’t understand this whole “let’s go into battle while we have a newborn!” thing. At least they didn’t pull a Tonks & Lupin and kick the bucket.

The weird/bad retcons:
- Giles is suddenly an adult again for no reason.
- Illyria is back in charge and Fred gets a hot second of airtime. Also did Illyria just asplode Fred’s body to return to her previous form?? Why isn’t Angel sad about THAT?
- Buffy & Spike are broken up for absolutely no reason. This literally furthers the plot NOT AT ALL. And considering where they were in their relationship at the end of season 11, it especially makes zero sense.
- No appearances of Dowling (despite a fair amount of SFPD talk), Koh, the aunts, or any Slayers we know aside from Buffy, Faith, & Melaka.
- MAYOR WILKINS. And not just Mayor Wilkins, but SNAKEBEAST MAYOR WILKINS. Seriously who thought that was a good idea?

Look I get coming full circle with the Fray plot, I do. But Harth is a stupidly annoying villain who needed to go forever ago. All of it just could have been handled better. Ah god, and it been forever since I read Fray and I recall loving it, but the future-slang is exhausting.

Oh and Georges Jeanty’s art is possibly at its worst here. How dare they replace Rebekah Isaacs with this!

Honestly, just sorry I read this. I’m going to just pretend it never existed, along with Angel season 11. Ooh and I’m definitely not reading Giles Girl Blue now.
