Illuminae by Jay Kristoff, Amie Kaufman
3.0

*3.5

Before we get into this short (and shitty) review, I just want to say that I in no way support the recent racism Jay Kristoff has showed and been exposed for on Twitter! However, my grandparents gifted me this entire series for Christmas a few years back, and I feel weird having this books on my shelf and not reading them! And, if I do ever read anything else from Jay Kristoff besides the Illuminae Files, I will 100% be checking them out from the library (and you will be able to find them under the “library book” tag). Anyways, that’s all I wanted to say, let’s just get into this review lol.

This book had its issues, but I think the audiobook really saved this for me. I tried to read this physically a few years back (first review is still down below but it’s cringe lol), and couldn’t get into it, however I thought this was a solid read this time around. Even though I gave this a 3.5 star, this book reminded me why I really like sci-fi (even though I haven’t read it in so long whoops), especially space operas.

I will say the first 30%-40% were kind of confusing and boring (which was where I DNF’ed last time) but I was pretty invested after that. Ending was a bit long, but the audiobook for this was absolutely incredible. Probably in my top 3 best narrated audiobooks I’ve ever read tbh. It almost sounded like I was listening to Star Wars, with a full narrated cast, explosive sound effects, call sound effects, voice overs, ect. It was amazing

Also the very very end made me really want to continue on with book 2, so hopefully I’ll listen to that next month.

First DNF

I read this awhile ago with my friend Alli, and we both Dnfed it. It wasn't my or her cup of tea. Not that the idea of the book wasn't good, because it caught my attention right away, but I just have the attention span of a fish, and I was getting really bored. Still a pretty cool idea though, and the characters were interesting enough.
