Gretchen is living her best witchy life. It’s 1975 and she is enjoying all the company of the lady lovers in her coven. It doesn’t matter that they don’t know she’s an actual witch, it’s all fun and games. Gretchen doesn’t want to take life too seriously, she’s content with casual flings, shifts at the local diner and occasionally helping out with coven duties. Really, what more could she want?

Enter Jace, a grad student and professor at Wellesley College, just across town from Gretchen’s coven. Jace is a witch, and a powerful one, but between racist covens, family obligations, and misogynistic senior professors, she has her schedule full with just trying to prove her right to be there. Yet when they cross paths at a college event, they are immediately taken with each other. Despite their vastly different opinions and worldviews, they keep finding themselves together, in more ways than one. But when a familiar evil threatens their lives and the lives of the coven, can they come together to defeat it and save their magic sisters? Or will their stubbornness and miscommunication keep them from discovering their true power together? All the witchy hijinks and more in A Witch’s Entanglement.

This was such a delightful romantasy. The 1970s setting was a much-appreciated nostalgia that was perfect escapism. The blending of romance and fantasy was also well done. With enough time devoted to lore and background, the magic system could really be understood. While still maintaining the romance and relationships at the forefront of the book. The plot was interesting, the characters had great chemistry and the writing style kept me engaged. If you like 70’s witches and steamy sex you are in the right place!

The plot confused me for a bit as 2/3s of the book was all about the romance between the characters. All the roadblocks and conflicts were internal, and while I enjoy that in romance books, I started to get nervous that the stakes wouldn’t increase. But my worries were dashed in the last ⅓ that had me devouring it to get to the ending. I appreciated the addition of the external villain, and while it was a bit predictable, and I put it together rather fast, it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the twist.

The characters were so fun as well. Their meet-cute was adorable and the chemistry was immediate. The author also didn’t shy away from discussing their racial differences and the racism Jace experienced. I appreciated that because the author is white, which always makes me nervous when there is a character of color. I enjoyed Jace and saw a lot of myself in her ambition and drive. And Gretch was a great contrast to that energy. Together they struck a good balance and their intellects were a better match than I initially thought. Not to mention their crazy sex scenes, especially when they met on the astral plane, talk about creativity!

Now, the writing style was the only thing that kept it at four stars for me. It was just a little too much tell and not enough show. It felt like I was being spoon-fed on how to feel and react, which isn’t my favorite. But that isn’t enough for me to dislike it, as I had a great time reading it. I think if the background details and such were a little more woven into the story, it would be a solid 4.5 stars.

All and all this flirty romantasy is a great read. From the academic vibes to the freaky public sex scenes, you will not want to put it down. Not to mention wishing you could travel back in time to hang out with the coven. If you love cozy witches and great chemistry, you are in the right place. Happy reading!
