Lord of the Flies by William Golding

A more brutal, ruthless version of Peter pan and the lost boys. I knew this book was messed up, I just didn't know how much it would affect me. I was so angry whole reading and after I finished it, I just had to talk to someone about it!

First off, I cannot believe that my sweet Piggy died the way he did. From the start you could feel like something bad would happen to him, I just wasn't expecting it to happen like that. He was the only voice of reason among the boys, if Ralph was half as smart he would have listened to him a bit more, instead of feeling like he knew everything. Piggy is the only character I really enjoyed, all the other boys didn't catch my eye and those that did, it wasn't on a positive way.

Jack is the epitomy of the oppressed boy who copes with this by bullying others and being extremely violent. To say that I hated him is an understatement, he was the villain of this book and I hope he got trapped in the fire in the end and he wasn't saved. He was one the reasons things took such a dark turn and he made some pretty stupid decisions, like the one where he decided to burn down the island in order to find Ralph... Clever boy, huh?

Ralph on the other hand, was a boy quite clever, who knew how to be the leader, until someone easily dethroned him. He wasn't a leader by nature, in the sense that he was very quickly put to the side and the ready of the boys immediately changed sides. Ralph had many clever ideas, but didn't know how to make himself heard and how to silence his "opponents". It was so easy for Jack to silence Ralph and become the new leader that the reader wonders where is Ralph's strength. I also think that Ralph didn't really understand the needs of the boys, he was very focused on the fire, that he forgot he should keep his tribe happy so as to prevent fights.

Cruel things happened on this island and the sad thing is that the island didn't do that to the kids, they kids already had it in them. I believe that all this different behaviors came out in the island, because if offered them freedom and no adult supervision. I don't think that the island changed the kids, it just brought their worst traits to light.
