james_desantis 's review for:
From the New World, Volume 1
by Yusuke Kishi
I only bought this because it was on sale on Comixlogy. It has iffy reviews (3.5/5 is pretty low for Manga on here). And I wasn't too sure I'd enjoy it. Actually, when I cracked it open on my tablet I wasn't too invested in the first 30-40 pages.
This was about 6 childhood friends all working together towards their dream. They want to use Magik and use it to get far in life. They want to graduate school and go out on an adventure! But one of them might not be able to contain it. Two of them are messing around and fucking each other when one of them might be in love with another. A new member enters the group and it feels off beat. And while the atmosphere remains very happy at the start it soon turns sour.
And that's where the series began to draw me in. It's unsettling when the first major death happens. But it only gets more screwed up the further we go into this world. It's life or death and you can die at any time which puts this series in a interesting spot between typical and "whoa" moments. I think the benefit is the mystery, and world building, is all pretty strong. I want to learn more as I went on. The action is easy to follow and brutal, so if you like things like Berserk or Goblin Slayer this will work for you.
Now it's said when you buy the title but this is 18+ only. There's a few graphic scenes. Actually there's a full on sex scene between two girls and it's about as graphic as full blown porn so be prepared. At first the fan service annoyed me but the time I got to the actual sex scene it made sense because it actually helps two characters grow and their backstory.
So overall, it's uneven but I can't help but be interesting. So i bought the next few volumes on sale too. A 3.5 out of 5.
