It's so difficult to review second and third books in a series without giving anything away, but I didn't want to NOT post about The Obelisk Gate because you all need to go read this trilogy! It's the first time in a LONG time that I've continued a trilogy so quickly. Usually my style is, read book one, wait a year, read book two 😂 But with this, I just needed more of this world ASAP!
.
In this book, Jemisin takes us deeper into the magic system and naturally gives us a bit more world-building. I wouldn't go so far as to say it suffers Second Book Syndrome because there's no suffering about it - I still enjoyed every page! But the pace is definitely a bit slower than The Fifth Season. There's more planning (on behalf of the characters), talking, and adapting to new environments, than action. But then she does ramp it up in the last 50 pages - I need to get my copy of The Stone Sky before the end of September! I can't wait to see how everything's going to come together in the final book.
.
I also really enjoyed getting to know more about some minor characters from book one! I did wonder what was going to happen with the narration in this book, but I was happy with the outcome! And really I won't be saying more than that, the award for the vaguest caption ever goes to me! But I don't want to risk spoiling anything about these brilliant books. So just go get yourself a copy of The Fifth Season, or The Obelisk Gate, wherever you're up to and enjoy!
