Blanca & Roja
by Anna-Marie McLemore
DID NOT FINISH
WARNING this review is vaguely spoilery? Sort of, not really, but some people might see it as such so just in case!!
DNF'd at 42%
Considering how much I adored Wild Beauty, I'm so sad about Blanca & Roja. This one just didn't hit the mark for me. I loved the characters, the premise was great, the pacing was maybe a little slow but not bad, and the writing is of course stunning. But think where McLemore lost me was the decision to pit the sisters against each other. I'm a strong believer in women supporting each other through everything, so I really didn't like the direction that this book took. I think I would have loved it if it was just these two sisters against the world, hand in hand until the end. Instead it was the two of them fighting over a boy, which is 100% not my jam. Maybe later on in the book they get their shit together and actually communicate about what's going on, but at 42% they had not and had descended into secrecy and competition. I'm so sad to be DNFing this, I really wanted to like it :(
