The Collected Schizophrenias
by Esmé Weijun Wang
hopeful
informative
reflective
This is a nuanced look at schizophrenia and mental illness in general, particularly the essays in which Esmé Weijun Wang writes about wanting to appear normal and respectable. My only problem with this book is the essay about having children. She describes her experience of working with mentally ill children, some of whom were also diagnosed with autism. She uses the word "tantrum" when an autistic child was more likely having a meltdown. I hope by now the author knows that an autistic meltdown is not the same as a tantrum. Overall I did very much like reading these essays and would recommend this collection to anyone who wants to learn about schizophrenia.
