With Any Luck
by Ashley Poston
Ashley Poston’s short story delivers a whimsical take on the familiar “always the bridesmaid, never the bride” trope, with a magical twist: the protagonist believes she’s cursed—every person she kisses finds true love, just not with her. It’s a clever and charming premise that sets the stage for a light, fast-paced romantic comedy.
The story leans into Poston’s signature humor and heart, and the dialogue is snappy and fun. However, the short format leaves little room to truly connect with the characters. Just as you start to care about their journey, it’s already wrapping up. While the concept is undeniably cute, it feels a bit rushed—like a spark that doesn’t have time to fully catch fire.
If you enjoy bite-sized love stories with a quirky edge, this might hit the spot. But if, like me, you prefer time to settle in and fall for the characters, this one might leave you wishing for a full-length novel instead.
