Running With Lions by Julian Winters
5.0

Deep stuff first. This book had literally everything that all young adult books should have: representation. It represented different races, different sexualities, different religions, and not only did it represent them, but it did it really well. The topic of homphobia in sports was also recurring and important to recognise, and surprising to see. Normally it would be acknowledged, but not actually discussed, and I loved how the whole team were supportive, regardless of their own sexuality.

The relationships were real, and not just the romantic one between Sebastian and Emir, but their friendship, and Sebastian's friendships with his friends. I loved how interested Sebastian was in Emir's religious and ethnic background, which for me wasn't very common. People were different, and at my school people weren't bullied for it, but we weren't encouraged to discuss and celebrate our differences. I'm glad Emir has Sebastian that does that.

The adults in this book weren't just minor characters, they had some depth to them. Although the coaches didn't have many lines, you could feel their presence and impact in the lives of Sebastian and his friends, and the morals they instilled. Sebastian's mother was my favourite, as instead of berating her child for not knowing what do in the future, something many parents do, she accepted, or rather respected his decision.

There was a bit on angst, but it was overruled by the fluff parts, which I won't list since a) that'd be too many spoilers and b) that'd be too long of a list. The ending, is just as fluffy.
Every time I turned the page there was another thing for me to fall in love with, so I could talk about this for hours. To conclude however, this is a wholesome read and relatable for any audience!
