Nana, Vol. 1 by Ai Yazawa
3.0

Nana has had a lot of critical and fandom love. I always wanted to get into it and now that I did... I'm a little underwhelmed.

Now like any good slice of life manga I'm sure it'll take time to spice things up. To get to the real drama. To get to the heart of it all. But as it stands, this introduced two very different characters going through similar situations.

You have two characters, Nana 1, who's a love stricken young girl who deals with her first major breakup and then has to try and learn to move on with life and grow up. We have Nana 2, who deals with her first major love interest and break up, but with her it also effects her job and work she does as well. Nana 1 feels very much like the end of high school and getting into adulthood, she's more of a silly character at times, and though her heart is in the right place she makes way too many silly mistakes.

Nana 2 feels alot more like a young girl forced to grow up a lot quicker. Falling in love with someone who gave her the time and day, and then he makes a huge change to his life effecting hers.

Overall, this is pretty good but not great. First half feels wordy and needlessly dramatic, and every guy is a huge horny dick and every girl is love struck. I feel the second half, with Nana 2, is much better and more interesting story and characters.

I'll be checking out more volumes but this one didn't blow me away.
