The Magicians
by Lev Grossman
Picked up this book because I found it on a list of book to read if you enjoyed the Harry Potter series. I was very hesitant of reading this book because of being disappointed. I should have listened to myself. I was very disappointed. I would not suggest this book to anyone.
There were parts of the story that I felt was building up to have something happen, then it just fell flat and boring. There was one point that Q goes through this whole ordeal, completes it, gets dropped off and everything was just like, meh ok. I seriously thought that it was him hallucinating or something. I just feel like it's a book about a bunch of kids after high school that just drink, have sex and do drugs.
The the whole deal with demons? What was even the point of that. It didn't seem to fit with the flow of the book. A common thing I have seen is that most think, "OH demons and witchcraft and wiccans and magic all go together!" They do not. Witchcraft or Wicca has nothing to do with being a magician. Then Q finally uses his demon... and it's useless.
The characters were boring and don't grow up at all throughout the book. Everyone is so apathetic. They can do MAGIC! They are just like -sigh- more work to do.
Magic disciplines doesn't seem to matter at all. Find out that he doesn't have one in school. years later, still doesn't have one. Except for a small few of the characters, they never even use the discipline magic.
Alice is doing all these magic sequences and changing animals fast. When has she even practiced to do anything? If she was learning this stuff, why did Q not know anything? and Q was just... useless. He does nothing. Nothing with his life, nothing in the battle.
Overall, I just didn't like the book. It could have been executed much better and would have been way more interesting.
