The Heartbreak Bakery was one of my most anticipated releases for the second half of the year. Unfortunately, I think my expectations for this story were too high. While the novel has great gender identity representation (with the two main characters being transgender and agender), the plot was just a little too cheesy for me. Fans of magical realism will probably enjoy this book more than others as there is a magical baking component to the story. While I think that The Heartbreak Bakery is an important read, I just didn't love it the way I was expecting to.
