I'm not entirely sure what it is, but Devney Perry just doesn't write like she used to. This really fell flat for me and bothered me in so many ways. It started off pretty decent, then went downhill. Faye becomes insufferable and Rush just didn't seem all that interested in being a dad. They were both careless and reckless - she's a waitress in a small town and is basically poor, but tells Rush they don't need a condom and he, a football star who hopes to make it to the NFL, agrees and then surprise, surprise... she's pregnant and both of them act like it's life ruining. Also, Maverick was SO mean and evil and I just couldn't get past that. It was so unnecessary. Like, I understand warning your friend but he was just cruel to Faye when she hadn't given him a reason to. I honestly didn't feel like these two had much chemistry at all and it was pretty bland. Sigh. I hope for better in her next books, but I'm not so sure.
