American Predator is a true crime novel with details collected by Maureen Callahan in the case of Israel Keyes.

I had first heard about Israel Keyes from an episode of some true crime show on Oxygen a few years ago and that episode left me wondering just how many people Keyes killed. People are likening him to a recent Ted Bundy.

The case that was ultimately his downfall, the kidnapping and murder of Samantha Koenig in Anchorage opened up a can of worms so to speak.

How many people did Keyes kill besides Samantha and the Currier family? Did he kill those two young girls in Washington?

Could he be connected to the disappearance of Indiana University student Lauren Spierer? I certainly believe there could be some connection there.

Did the FBI make a deal with Keyes so that barely any information of his crimes would be released to the public? I wouldn’t doubt it and that’s probably why many think that this book doesn’t have enough details or that it came out too soon. If the FBI made a deal with Keyes, that would be an explanation to the lack of released information.

Above all: I think this case shines light on a huge problem in America, the lack of communication between counties and between states when it comes to cases of missing and murdered people. Perhaps if there was more communication, more cases could be solved and perhaps more could be linked to Keyes.

Overall, American Predator left me with more questions than what I went in with, but I think that’s the point of a good true crime book.
