A Clockwork Orange
by Anthony Burgess
Most know this book as a famously banned book in the USA, which was one of the reasons I picked it up. This turned into one of my favorite books because of the style of writing. Anthony Burgess is a brilliant writer! Though this book is difficult to read because it is very graphic, I think it's fascinating how Burgess essentially creates his own language -- one that you do not have to study to understand the book because it is similar enough to English, but different enough that the language itself distances you from the terrible things happening in the book. You find yourself focusing on reading the words themselves. The words do not flow with a sense of elegance, they constantly bring you to pause and remember what a certain word means, or even sometimes going to the back in the glossary to remember what the book is about. Those brief pauses prevent as fluid of a read, creating distance between the violence and yourself, in turn making it easier to stomach the violence. Honestly, that alone fascinates me enough to read it again and to give it 5/5 stars. I would definitely recommend!
