james_desantis 's review for:
Tokyo Ghoul: re, Vol. 16
by Sui Ishida
I finished this yesterday but wanted to reflect on it a bit.
Tokyo Ghoul as a manga was messy at times. With RE especially adding SO many new characters it was hard to keep up with them all. On top of that the art would be amazing at times and other times hard to tell who the hell is who. The battle scenes could be spectacular to "what the heck is happening?" and the dialogue at times can be a bit cheesy.
Saying all that I think Tokyo Ghoul and its sequel Tokyo Ghoul RE will go down as some of my favorite mangas of all time. The way Sui Ishida gave us a tale of Kaneki, a nerdy kid who gains powers far beyond him, and then forced into a world only to try and change the way it is ran was super special for me.
Maybe one day I'll write down a review of the whole series but let us talk about the final volume. This is what it all boils down to. Everyone picking and choosing a side and how we'll save the world from this new poison that is infecting humans. Keneki has to make a choice and he finally decides he won't sit back and let anyone else get hurt. Going inside the belly of the beast he goes to face his biggest enemy of all time.
On top of this we get a lot of final fights with some big characters. Plenty of touching reunions, sacrifices, and amazing battles.
The issue seems to stem from the final chapter, which people felt was super rushed. I can see that complaint and can even agree the whole "Telling us how everyone ends up" was a little weak. However, the actual set up worked super well for me. This series is big on loss and regret and not a happy ending so when the ending turned out to be somewhat happy I was surprised!
I think the plotting was a bit messy in the final few arcs, or actually in general with RE, but it's the characters ishida NAILED. So many wonderful moments with them, growth, and complexity that could have just been ignored for flashy fights. I give Sui Ishida a lot of credit for putting characters through the ringer but giving us results.
This final chapter isn't perfect, like the series, but I can't help but love it. A 4.5 out of 5. I'm bumping it to a 5.
