The Big Over Easy
by Jasper Fforde
I went into The Big Over Easy completely unsure about what to expect. And, I must say, that I ended up really liking this book!
The Big Over Easy was a quirky and funny book that was a very enjoyable read! I never would have thought that the combination of humor and mystery would work well, but Jasper Fforde's writing did an amazing job making it work. The story incorporated so many different nursery rhymes and even mythology in a way that was satisfying for older readers. The whole story was very cleverly written and the "reimaginings" of the old rhymes made the story really fun. Also, the excerpts from the old newspaper stories of past nursery crimes helped the reader to get a feel for the town of Reading. I also really liked how the "epilogue" of sorts was short and sweet, and we got a good wrapped up ending!
The characters in this book were all so different from the usual characters in mystery novels. I can't choose a favorite character because I liked all of them for different reasons. Jack Splatt, the main character, was very average and definitely not the usual detective. But, there were parts of his character that made the book really funny! Mary Mary was also an interesting character that I wish I got to learn more about.
As for the actual mystery: I couldn't guess the true killer! The ending was a total surprise to me, and I liked that ending!
Overall, I really enjoyed The Big Over Easy, and I'm excited to read more books by Jasper Fforde!
