ashliesydel 's review for:
A Shiver of Light
by Laurell K. Hamilton
I have always considered myself a loyal LKH fan. I have stuck by her in both the Anita Blake and Merry series. Despite the negative reviews from others claiming Anita was porn and Merry's magical vagina was over-rated. I stayed and I purchased each book.
But there comes a point in a reader's journey when you have to accept that the author may be writing while high on payote. And the bad reviews may hold some weight.
Things I liked- The first description of the babies, the interaction of the dads with said babies. Interactions with the queen and her interest in being an aunt. Merry not taking shit from Seelie nobles. Merry using her powers to a little bit of ass. Reality Tv talk. Mauve showing her true bitch colors. Merry standing up for her men.
Things I did not like- The constant description of everyone's clothing. Seriously it took 3-4 pages to describe the color, fabric, and cut of everyone's clothes. The constant description of the babies. I got it. They aren't the Gerber baby but do we need 8 paragraphs describing little bit's eye balls? Merry allowing others to disrespect her over and over again. I'm sorry but if I'm royalty I'll be damned if I'm going to feed and provide shelter for stuck up ass munchers to treat me like I'm lesser. Grow some balls Merry. Mauve's cockiness. Merry's contraction to claiming she is ruthless but then does NOTHING short of baking cookies. All the pages I wasted on Aisling's beauty.
In all the story was okay. Not what I was expecting when it came to the birth of the babies. It lacked action and had a bunch of filler. I feel like if they had cut out 1/4 of the unnecessary fashion week descriptions it would habe been better.
