Heartbreaking and profound and beautifully told, For Today I Am a Boy is about identity and about family and the complicated mix of feelings that make up a human existence. Straightforwardly told with an honesty that reminded me of memoir but with a fine art sense of creative liberties - in that there was no fight to include *every* detail as an author may feel pressured towards in telling their own story. The story rang very true to me, although I hesitate to make that judgement as someone whose life experience doesn't touch much of the struggle of being trans or of growing up a minority in a small town or in an immigrant household.
