Rana Joon and the One and Only Now by Shideh Etaat

I really enjoyed this book, and I was sad I didn't read it earlier for North Star. It's about a girl dealing with the grief from the death of her best friend while her family has many complications. She's Iranian-American, and her father works and lives in Iran and visits for one month of the year. Her mom makes a lot of comments about her body, and her brother seems to get away with everything. On top of all that, Rana is a lesbian, and doesn't know how to tell her folks. I really enjoyed the way Etaat tells the story, how Rana is a complex character with complex friends and family.
