clairbear1989 's review for:
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two
by J.K. Rowling
I've read some other comments (not here - on Facebook) where they say they felt this story was too fanfiction-y, or that it felt flat.
To address point 1 - it has been years since we had a new Harry Potter story. Of course, we have built up our own ideas on what Harry's future was like. Of course, this story might not match our own ideas. But this is not fanfiction. It is a real jk Rowling Harry Potter story, and actually, in my opinion, feels very much realistic to the Harry Potter world. Yes the characters talk differently - but they talk realistically, how they would if they actually were real, and as someone who has seen the play, the actors definitely did the characters justice. I felt like I could walk on stage and hug Harry - and that it was THE Harry Potter, straight from the books, that I was hugging.
To address point 2 - this is a play script. Not a complete story. There is no emphasis on how lines are said, how big the gaps are, how the characters look when they're saying it. There is so much humour and sarcasm and wit in this script, that it's best portrayed in its intended format - as a play. The script merely gives you a peek into that world. I appreciate that most people will have not seen the play (yet, if at all) but a stage production was always it's intended form. One day, it will tour the world, I'm sure. Perhaps one day a TV/ film version will be made.
Basically, my own opinion is that it was an amazing play, with every possible good point (except in my preview the cables failed at one point and a demented had to be dragged off stage sideways, which was hilarious - but it was a preview - things were being constantly improved). I really appreciate the chance to hold the script in my own hands.
