Some of the storytelling hasn't aged well for easy current reading (very wordy, more telling than showing, the term used for black characters has evolved to be a racial slur nowadays), but I enjoyed learning new words (e.g. chanticleer, cognomen, rantipole), gorgeous scenic imagery and gentle humor (Ichabod seems inclined to eat everything he sees)
