librarianryan 's review for:
Armada
by Ernest Cline
This is the first time ever that an audio book has been able to keep my attention from beginning to end. I won't lie, there were some slow points in the middle, but still, complete attention. When you get a good book and a good narrator together, wow! I have tried to listen to some of my favorite books on audio to no avail. However, the partnership of Ernest Cline and Will Wheaton grabs you and does not let go. Will, you should do MORE AUDIOBOOKS. But only if they are as well written as Armada. I decided to try Armada because I read and loved Ready Player One. A big library user, I could not get a digital copy of Armada unless I went audiobook, so what the heck I gave it a try. I have read some other reviews that say Armada is too derivative, but when I read those comments I think, aren't most books.
Armada pays loving tribute to 80’s pop culture in the best way possible. It links video games, rock music, and space invasions together in a fresh and readable way. As a fan of the Last Starfighter do not find this book to be a copycat, but a chance to delve deeper into the thoughts of our actions, if we were to (or maybe have) encounter(ed) another planetary species. It's hard to say what the best part of this book is: the sarcastic comments that I felt could have come from my own mouth, the space age action, or the depiction of my childhood in print. Then again, my favorite part may just be that he left it open for a sequel. Way to go Ernest Cline, and awesome telling Will Wheaton. #WillWheaton #Armada #ErnestCline
