Harry Potter and the Cursed Child: Parts One and Two by Jack Thorne

Okay… I have really mixed and confused feelings about this so I won’t be giving any starred mark out of 5. My opinions below are mostly non-spoiler, the major plot details are hidden.

Firstly, I can’t deny the fact that whilst reading the first part, I felt SO GOOD. I love this world and being thrown back into it felt like seeing an old friend again. But then, I realised that my old friend had been tampered with and moulded into something different.

The first scene was great, the friendship scenes between the kids were great. The little elements that referenced moments we already know and love were good. My nostalgic potterhead heart skipped a few beats. But here’s my problem:
There were major things that hurt me. The characters we know and love are doing and saying things that are just completely out of character. Whether it’s Harry
Spoilernot particularly to Albus but to McGonagall mostly
, Hermione
SpoilerShe’s basically a b*tch, right?
, Ron
Spoilerso he’s simply comic relief now?
or even and most importantly/shockingly:
SpoilerSnape wanting to thank Harry??? NOOO
, they just WERE NOT the same characters. And I get that 20 years has passed, I get that people evolve, but not in this way.
However I liked the kids, and fell in love with one in particular
SpoilerScorpius, my darling
. Also,
SpoilerI ship Albus and Scorpius, like you all do, and am angry at that JKR has said that it would be too ‘fanfiction-like’… Yeah, because HETERONORMATIVITY! FU
Grrrrrrr.

I won’t get too much into the thing that everyone finds ridiculous
SpoilerDelphi being the daughter of Voldy and Bella ?? That’s not possible, on so many levels
, but yes, it IS ridiculous.
Finally, I felt like the
Spoiler‘timey wimey let’s go back in time so many times’
was too full of plot holes it just didn’t stay very believable, which is such a shame because I wanted to believe in another story by JKR in the wizarding world we love …
