James by Percival Everett
4.5

I’ve never read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn so I went into this completely blind. I think the prose was fantastic. I loved the switches between “proper” English and the English that the slaves spoke when speaking to or within hearing distance of white people. I think Everett gave a master class in what subverting a classic looked like and I couldn’t put it down. I loved the conversations that James had with Voltaire and the various other philosophers. I also think a lot of the commentary is applicable to today and I’m sure that Everett was very intentional in doing so. A great shorter read that had me debating if I want to read Huck Finn.
