Overview
A personal challenge to read as many of the biggest horror (and horror-adjacent) authors in the business using the podcast Talking Scared, hosted by Neil McRobert, as reference. I thought I'd make it public in case anyone else is this crazy too. :)
The challenge prompts correspond to podcast episodes. I've chosen to highlight one book per prompt when only one author is on the show, but I've listed alternate books for each challenge that are either:
1) the author's previous works up to the point of that interview, if they exist OR
2) works discussed by the author and host on the episode OR
3) suggestions for read-alike or related themes. (Feel free to add your own.)
This is not hard and fast, and it gets tricky when people who haven't written books are on the show (like horror show-runner Mike Flannagan). I've done my best suggesting books and alternates- feel free to use your own judgment!
Note that the alternate books listed may go well beyond the bounds of "horror-adjacent" - an author may reference a work of literary fiction about depression that helped inspire the tone of their horror novel, for example, or a science or history book that inspired their themes.
I highly recommend listening to the episode that matches the work!
Feel free to use this to keep track of what you've read by an author- for example, feel free to read *both* Paul Tremblay's Survival Song and A Head Full of Ghosts for Prompt #1.
In an ideal world, I'll be adding prompts as the podcast updates, but I can't swear to do so, let alone in a timely manner.
