Overview
Students Across the Seven Seas (S.A.S.S.) is a young adult novel series published by Penguin between 2005 and 2010. It is a multi-author series based on the idea of studying abroad. Students Across the Seven Seas (or "S.A.S.S." for short) is the name of the fictional study abroad organization which arranges the visits. Each book centers on an American teenage girl and her experiences studying abroad in a foreign country such as France, Spain, Sweden or Italy. The titles of the books are witty plays on words featuring the country and a common phrase, such as Spain or Shine and Swede Dreams.

These books are what gave me the confidence to pursue my dream of studying abroad. They’re fun and lighthearted, while also giving the reader a chance to learn a bit about the setting, its climate, and the people who live there.
Having a new protagonist visiting a different country in each book keeps the series fresh while retaining the same core framework of the stories. The girls navigate the challenges of living and studying abroad, making and maintaining friendships within the program, sometimes encountering love interests, sometimes struggling with difficult situations back home.
I talk to many other YA fans and nobody else I’ve asked has heard of them. I think that’s a shame because they’re so much fun! At a time when international travel is difficult and expensive, it’s nice to be able to sample what other countries might be like through books.
