Things to know before starting this challenge:
- These are a few books that have been referenced in the ATEEZ storyline, I'm sure there are a lot more I've missed.
- The "optional/bonus" books are those which I'm not completely sure are connected to ATEEZ storyline, but they're still relevant!
- Highly recommend watching TinyInkBug's video (<click) about UTOPIA, Brave New World and ISLAND to get a better understanding of how these books connect with ATEEZ lore.
- DUNE and Brave New World have been adapted into movies, so you may watch those instead if you prefer, though I will encourage you to read the books!
- Other pieces of media/literature which are important are:
- The movie INCEPTION
- Schiller's Ode To Joy
That's it! Have fun reading

Challenge Books

The Complete Peter Pan
J.M. Barrie
ATEEZ have referenced Peter Pan often in multiple songs, sometimes by name and sometimes by theme
In ILLUSION, they borrow a lot of imagery as well as themes from Peter Pan, such as forgetting their memories when they land in Neverland and getting lost in partying all night long even as something inside of them screams "Let Me Free". Here is a great write-up explaining this!
In ILLUSION, they borrow a lot of imagery as well as themes from Peter Pan, such as forgetting their memories when they land in Neverland and getting lost in partying all night long even as something inside of them screams "Let Me Free". Here is a great write-up explaining this!
Where am I now? Who are you?
I've never felt this before
Right now I don't know much about this paradise
First let's party all night long
In WONDERLAND where Hongjoong (suspiciously) talks about never growing up, leading to multiple theories about how he is indeed Peter based on his sus actions previously in ILLUSION and now in Wonderland. His obsession with not growing up and staying immature is continued in FEVER series which further solidifies this theory
All eyes on me now
If you still doubt mine
It’s too pointless
We’re still young and wild
We gonna find new world to be mine
The island where the map calls
Is everyone’s dream and fear
Dream starts in the end, wings spread
Forever child like Peter, hey
More recently, in IT's You
Feel it
A sigh within the rhythm
Spread in one's breath
The world of two of us, oh
Freely without any distractions
There are no boundaries to our dreams, joyfully
Neverland is a fantasy that's prepared only for us
Fly endlessly like Peter Pan
Another theory that I would like to point out by someone on tumblr is:
Continuing the theme of PETER PAN and the lost boys, in ILLUSION mv we see ATEEZ going to Neverland, losing their memories and being caught up in "partying all night long" while Hongjoong encourages them to forget about everything and party, silencing them when they express doubt. Immediately followed by Crescent where a mysterious voice asks them to wake up. The theory is that ATINY or HALAteez play the role of Wendy, trying to wake them up. There are six lost boys, 1 Peter (Hongjoong) and one awakened person who is not 'lost' (probably Wooyoung as he's the only one alive at the end of HALA HALA)
[Sorry that was too long, I'm just too passionate about books and ATEEZ]
2
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde
Robert Louis Stevenson
This book explores the themes of Good and evil both residing in a person, and is about not letting your "evil" side take over.
I am fully aware that this is an outdated theory about HALA HALA and Say My Name, but I think we should appreciate what ATEEZ tell us through their music without the diary entries too. HALA HALA, in my humble opinion, explores the themes of ambition vs greed, which this book captures perfectly!

Utopia
Thomas More
ATEEZ literally have a song called Utopia. And if that doesn't convince you, this book is about a literal Utopian Island which is perfect in every way. Utopian society is based on rational thought, communal property, productivity, no class distinctions or poverty, no crime or immoral behavior, religious freedom, and no violence. The perfect world ATEEZ are trying to find in Treasure.
4
Brave New World
Aldous Huxley
!!IF YOU READ THIS BOOK, BE SURE TO READ ISLAND BY THE SAME AUTHOR IMMEDIATELY AFTER!!
It is also worth mentioning that:
It is also worth mentioning that:
- Another candidate for ATEEZ's name was New World, which could have been a very blatant reference to this novel
- This novel was written towards the beginning of Huxley's career and the ideas which he presents here are confronted again in Island by the same author
Brave New World by Aldous Huxley is a dystopian novel, which examines a futuristic society, called the World State, that revolves around science and efficiency. In this society, emotions and individuality are conditioned out of children at a young age, and there are no lasting relationships because “every one belongs to every one else”.
This also begs the question, in a perfect world with no poverty, sickness, or sadness, what is society missing?
This novel views the "Perfect society" without emotions with the lens of Dystopia, presenting a nightmarish view of society without any emotion or individuality.

Island
Aldous Huxley
!This was the last published novel by Aldous Huxley, read this only after you've read BRAVE NEW WORLD!
In this novel, the author explores the same idea of a 'perfect, emotionless' society, just through a different perspective, saying that being in a controlled, emotionless society is a great thing because their is inevitably less conflict and less violence caused by 'unnecessary' emotions.
This novel views the "Perfect society" without emotions with the lens of Utopia, presenting a blissful view of society without any emotion or individuality.
Thus this fictional "ISLAND" made by Aldous Huxley becomes both a Utopia and a Dystopia based on how you view it, thus these lyrics:

UTOPIA:
All of my life
The place I've been searching for
Is just out of reach
A faint mirage
Dreamer in a dream
A sea of fear and joy
Note: This is also seen in the Diary entries when Left Eye curses at ATEEZ for breaking his mirage caused due to Yellow smoke because while he does live in a mirage, atleast he is happy there and does not have to face the harsh reality, Again, both a Utopia and a Dystopia.

Alice's Adventures in Wonderland
Lewis Carroll
ATEEZ heavily reference this story in their first full album, "TREASURE EP FIN: All To Action", their title track is named "WONDERLAND" and the mv features members wearing Cheshire Cat outfits which are direct references to this book.
The B-sides, especially Dazzling Light, MIST and Precious also talk about "stumbling" upon another world and the confusion that follows with it, much like the plot of Alice in Wonderland.

1984
George Orwell
The concept of pretty much every modern day dystopian movie/book originates from this book. The 'Stricktland' concept of ATEEZ's storyline of the "WORLD" series has been derived from this book.

(bonus)
The Fellowship of the Ring
J.R.R. Tolkien
I do not think this book series is very relevant to ATEEZ storyline, but ATEEZ do make a very blatant reference as one of their songs in "THE WORLD EP 1 MOVEMENT" is titled THE RING, and the lyrics in the outro say:
One RIng to rule them all
One Ring to bring them all
However, we have reason to believe that ATEEZ actually reference this book because of the concept of volcanoes. Watch: TinyInkBug's video on this.
Nevertheless, it's a classic fantasy and I think everyone should give it a try!
9
Dune
Frank Herbert
Dune is an ATEEZ song! Just like the theme of the song and also the album, THE WORLD EP 2 OUTLAW, this book follows Paul, the protagonist who adapts to life in a new desert (Treasure and PK MVs) planet called Arrakis where the only valuable thing is spice. Rings a bell??
This is directly referenced in the Bouncy mv where Chilli Peppers are used as a way to re-iginite emotions!!

Treasure Island
Robert Louis Stevenson
This book has not been referenced explicitly in ATEEZ storyline, so I did not include it as a challenge book. However it does have Treasure in the title and has pirate themes, so....enjoy!!
