Overview
a selection of books about people that have escaped from north korea. i recommend using google maps to look at the satellite imagery for the locations named by the authors - i found that it helps the stories really sink in. also some of these stories have audiobooks that are well-worth a listen.

1
The Girl with Seven Names
Hyeonseo Lee, David John
This book is an all-time favourite of mine. I read it as a teenager and thought about it often for years and years. I'm now in my mid-twenties and a re-read of it has inspired me to read stories about other North Korean escapees.

In Order to Live: A North Korean Girl's Journey to Freedom
Yeonmi Park
"I am most grateful for two things: that I was born in North Korea, and that I escaped from North Korea. Both of these events shaped me, and I would not trade them for an ordinary and peaceful life."

The Hard Road Out
Jihyun Park, Seh-Lynn Chai
I loved reading about both authors (one from the North, one from the South) and how they each felt insecure when talking to the other. It was so nice to hear about them slowly opening up to the other, and how they can now communicate so many things without needing to speak the words out loud.

Dear Leader: Poet, Spy, Escapee - A Look Inside North Korea
Jang Jin-sung
This was such a unique story and it shared so many insights about what it's like to have a very high-up position in Pyongyang. His friendship with Young-min moved me.
