Overview

This reading order for Philip Pullman's His Dark Materials multiverse is based on a combination of the publication order and the internal chronological order of the trilogies and companion books. The original trilogy is required reading before the other books to avoid spoilers and for world building. After that, chronological order is best.

The first book of the original trilogy was published as Northern Lights in the UK and The Golden Compass in the US.

The Collectors
is bonus because it wasn't originally intended to be part of the multiverse and it is not essential to the overall story. (Apparently, it was Audible's idea to link it with His Dark Materials.)

While much of Once Upon a Time in the North takes place before La Belle Sauvage in the timeline, it belongs after Serpentine because of the framing story.

The Imagination Chamber is a collection of short stories set throughout both trilogies, so it fits best where it was published (after The Secret Commonwealth).
