Overview
This reading order for J. R. R. Tolkien's Middle-Earth universe is based primarily on the publication order but takes into account whether a book is more of a narrative or academic work. This list does not include The History of Middle-Earth and other works that are primarily out-of-universe.
After the main series, the list includes 2 works of poetry as bonus. Bilbo's Last Song is a short poem that serves as a kind of unofficial epilogue to The Lord of the Rings. The Adventures of Tom Bombadil is a poetry collection relating to the greater legendarium.

The Silmarillion gives an overview of the greater legendarium, and The Children of Húrin is a continuous narrative of a First Age Great Tale.
The rest of the extended works are listed as bonus because they're more fragmented and academic, presented as compilations of unfinished drafts with editorial notes and commentary.
Unfinished Tales has significant overlap with the other extended works. If you've already read the slightly more continuous Children of Húrin, you can skip the mostly redundant "Narn i Hîn Húrin" and you'd only be missing out on the commentary. The remaining tales are best read here first, even though the rest of Part One is covered in The Fall of Gondolin and Part Two is covered in The Fall of Númenor.
