I’ve always felt that the winner of this thing is entirely beside the point, unless the point is the fun of watching a novel go through the Rooster paddle line on its way to the final. It is interesting to me that pitting books in competition against each other is patently absurd, but rooting for books, the chief byproduct of this process, isn’t absurd at all. In fact it’s necessary for a healthy literary culture.
