This is a very sweet story about a young child dealing with the loss of his uncle, being haunted by his ghost, and learning the reason his uncle is haunting him. The core of this story was very warm and cosy. I don't think I've ever read a ghost story where the ghost was trying to help the person they were haunting. The fact that the spirit of this man refused to pass on and rest until he'd helped his nephew realise an important aspect of who he is was so sweet. Would definitely recommend to others looking for a cute read with a young trans protagonist.

“Being around Griffin, just for a few minutes, felt like practicing how to be a better version of myself. It needs work, but maybe if I practice often enough it will start to feel natural. Maybe it will stop being something I have to practice, and something I’ll just be. Maybe that’s what growing up is like. Practice makes a person.”

Too Bright to See is a surprisingly touching middle grade (light) horror novel about Bug, whose beloved uncle Roderick has just passed away, the summer before middle school. Bug lives in an old house in the country and has always known that the house is haunted, but now it seems that there’s a new ghost in the house - Uncle Roderick is back, and he has a very important message to share with Bug.
I am genuinely surprised by how much I enjoyed this queer little ghost story. I don’t often root for happy endings in horror, but getting to read the absolute best case scenario happen for sweet Bug was so heartwarming. If you are looking for a very quick and easy read, I highly recommend this book!
Moderate: Death, Terminal illness
Minor: Death of parent
Bug is a very interesting but relatable character. Bug is very in touch with the paranormal and understands that the house is haunted. As Bug’s uncle dies, Bug realized there is a new spirit in the house. One that may possibly be trying to send Bug a message… Throughout this book bug is faced with average middleschool girl issues. Bug isnt very into ‘girly’ things, but their companion is. Bug’s friend tries to open them up to their more feminine side, but bug soon realizes what that message the spirit was trying to send them. Definitely a book I plan on rereading.
