This was the definition of mid. Not too bad, not too good either. It was fine while I was reading it, but I'm probably not going to remember much about it.
3.5 stars. A solid read that I’ll definitely be picking up a sequel for!!
This is a gender swapped retelling of [b:The Count of Monte Cristo|7126|The Count of Monte Cristo|Alexandre Dumas|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1309203605l/7126._SY75_.jpg|391568], which is not a story I'm familiar with so I can't speak to how well the author stuck to the original story. It was a quick read, both Amaya and Cayo are likeable and relatable characters, struggling with issues teens face today like coming to terms with their parents as complex people who don't always make the right choices. It's the first in a duelology, and though the ending of this felt a little too easy, a character who had disappeared suddenly reappears with an important job and a ship (maybe it's from the original story?), I still enjoyed this as a whole and am looking forward to the sequel.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the revenge plot. I liked all the twists and I really liked all the characters!
10/10 like I loved every minute of this book and one of my perfect genres--pirates, games of deception, fantasy and a revenge story! At every cliffhanger and plot twist I was GASPING because I never could’ve guessed any of it. I would always read this again!

This is an original, fresh take on The Count of Monte Cristo. I liked the worldbuilding and the parallels between the way this book and the classic are written. Toward the end, the twists and suspense do not stop building, and the set-up for the sequel is clear and exciting.
