Perfectly fine book but I do feel like I’ve read this story a few times. I’m not familiar with the Count of Monte Christo so I can’t tell if there are just many modern day retellings of this OR a common fantasy trope.
Would read the sequel if I could pick it up for a reasonable price but won’t be keeping.

This book, I don't know what to say about this book. It wasn't blow-my-mind, but it also wasn't bad. It was okay, just okay.
The characters are really what drove the story. Amaya was not the most interesting. I really did enjoy reading about Cayo and his life. I really didn't care about Amaya. I really, really, really wish we could have seen more or Romora. She is such a badass female character, without having to be masculine. She uses her femininity as power, which I am game for.
Within the first few chapters of the book there is this three month jump, from when Amaya had escaped the ship to when she became the Countess. It was very sudden and it confused me. It was very very random. I wish it could have been explained earlier.
To be honest, I really didn't connect with the plot. The counterfeit money, casinos, gangs, etc, was not my jam. It felt so strange and disconnected when it was paired with a plot that is very ocean centered. It just felt... off.
This book is advertised as being a swashbuckling filled retelling of the Count of Monte Cristo. I can't judge the book on its retelling because I don't know the story of the Count of Monte Cristo. But, there was only one three paragraph scene of sword fighting, and it wasn't even that great.. the writing was flowery and it didn't suit the time for action.
The betrayal at the end of this book, I saw it from the beginning. And it is very sad when I see the shock of the finale in the beginning. The ending was so predictable, it didn't shock me at all. I was quite disappointed.
Here's the tea: I don't like it when in the middle of the book, there is pretty much only romance scenes. It makes things boring and that's exactly what happened here. I didn't care for Cayo and Amaya together. Like many things in this story, they didn't seem to fit either. It was like the author put in a romance when there didn't need to be one. She just did it for the sake of doing it.

Scavenge The Stars
⭐️⭐️⭐️
Such an interesting world, almost reminded me of Ketterdam and Ravka. I also quite liked the writing style.
Sadly though, I didn’t enjoy it as much as I wanted to. The characters were so boring, I felt like nothing ever happened. And when it actually did, it was just mediocre.
I kept waiting for something to happen, and then it just didn’t.
I was a bit confused about Bas and Cayo. To be honest I kind of shipped them first, they were cute. Then he just left.
I for sure thought I was going to give this one up, but some part of me wanted to keep on going and needed to know what was to happen.
So now that I’m done with this I’m finally going to read something else for a while.

I really wanted to love Scavenge the Stars but unfortunately I didn't enjoy it at all. From the beginning Boon and his plans are suspicious. Amaya doesn't ask any questions she just goes with it. I wanted more from the story.
What i liked:
-the sea town setting
-amaya
-the realistic take on periods, the LGBTQ community, relationships, mistakes
-the realistic ending
What i didn't like:
-the realistic ending
-the non-fleshed out side characters
-the non-fleshed out villian
-the predictable plot twists
