Adequate examination of the generals who helped make Rome. Excellent scholarship, mediocre writing.

A really interesting look at the history of Rome through generals. I love Roman history so I quite enjoyed this one. I will be looking into more of Goldsworthy's works.

Not goldsworthys best but def a good book for someone new to the subject. While not his best, it is an absolutely solid book and solidly written.

I was very interested to learn more about the Roman Empire, and the men who fought for it. I really wanted to love this book, but I did not. I found it boring and hard to get through. I hope anyone else who happens to read this has a better opinion of it than I do.
informative slow-paced

The book was too long-winded for my taste.

I confess I skipped the latter chapters concerning the Empire as my chief interest in this field lies within the days of the Republic.
