I cried and cried. I knew going in what the story was roughly going to be, but Sarah writes it so beautifully.

This book was great!!
While I don't agree with a few of McBride's current politics, this was a very impactful read for me during this time. As a trans person, it gave me a lot of hope to see a success story, in a way.
I do think this book shows a very idealized way of looking at the government and politics, but it's also 6 years old, and a lot of current culture has changed— including the approach to politics and protest— with Gen Z entering these spaces. Our [Gen Z] mentality towards politics is also vastly different from that of some older generations, whom of which got to exist in an arguably more stable world.
Overall, it reminded me that continuing to live as a trans person is an act of protest in and of itself.

I have heard about Sarah working in the Delaware legislature. I finally picked this up because she has just been elected to the U.S. Congress. Sarah weathered many ups and downs before running for office, which has surely prepared her for Congress. The book is approachable for anyone who is unfamiliar with her work or with transgender people in general. The book is easy to read and very thoughtful. This book ends in 2017–if you’re looking for hope after the 2024 presidential election, I recommend picking this up.
